OLD Technology Committee Chairperson / Co-Chairperson
An excellent role for: a seasoned veteran in Technology / Project Management, a young professional or college student wanting to further develop their leadership potential in Technology / Project Management, or a high school student with exceptional leadership skills wanting to gain some practical experience in Technology / Project Management. Anyone with a passion for serving their community, who shares our belief that math is for everyone, and who wants to help YDM empower young people and make engaging math learning opportunities accessible to all students.
Time commitment: 4 hours/week on average
Ideal candidates would have the following traits: Have tech experience and leadership experience. Be well-connected with Tech talent pools to aide with recruitment and organizational partnership formation. desire and ability to influence systems to change for the better; vision & creativity to craft proposals / ways to move teams forward; skill in communicating with various formats to gather input / suggestions / buy-in from teammates; desire and ability to nurture leadership capacity of teammates while pursuing collective goals.
Role Expectations/Duties:
- Ensure committee’s goals are well-defined, prioritized, specific, time-bound, and transparent to other YDM teams. Recruit & onboard new volunteers & see that they’re trained & empowered to excel. Coordinate goals with other committees and attend regular board meetings as milestone points / check-ins.
- Cultivate an understanding of shared purpose among committee members. Show the team what are the committee’s goals, why they are important to YDM’s mission, and how we are doing with our progress toward achieving them. Most other responsibilities of the chairperson and vice chairperson can be delegated to teammates, but cultivating the understanding of shared purpose, goals, importance, awareness of progress, and sense of accountability are the core responsibilities of leaders.
- Build awesome relationships. Get to know teammates, and help teammates get to know each other. Learn about each teammates’ interests and preferences for what kinds of contributions they wish to make to the team. Find ways to match YDM’s goals & needs with activities that match personal interests of teammates as much as possible.
- Share responsibilities and opportunities with the vice chairperson / co-chairperson and with other teammates. Learn from teammates. Make it easy for teammates to learn from each other.
- Guide the committee’s work toward achieving its goals. Ensure teammates are shown at least one viable way to accomplish what that the team has set out to do. Help keep the team keep focused on its goals. Ensure teammates have the clarity, tools, and support they need to achieve the goals. Ensure the committee operates within its scope and that the committee’s activities are aligned with the Organization’s mission and values.
- Encourage the team to innovate and suggest improved ways to accomplish our goals, as well as to think up new ideas for future goals. Guide the team to balance efforts between delivering results in the near-term and innovating & ideation for the long term.
- Establish a team rhythm, so that teammates easily learn how we do what we do. Create ways teammates participate individually or in pairs or in small groups in between team meetings. Promote large amounts of asynchronous collaboration so that significant progress is delivered between group sessions. Ensure committee meeting schedules are arranged to fit team needs.
- Represent the committee (including its goals, progress, successes, concerns, and needs) at regular Leadership Team meetings (every 2 months). The chairperson can delegate this to a team member, or, can personally serve as representative at LT meetings. Work with the rest of the Leadership Team to shape the Organization’s goals.
- Work with the Board Treasurer to establish & manage the committee’s budget, aligning the Organization’s financial resources & needs with the committee’s needs & goals.
- Develop oneself as a leader, and help teammates develop their leadership skills at the same time. Develop or recruit at least 2 people capable of being the next committee chairperson.
