Overview

At You Discover Math, we’ve been focused on growing our impact and deepening our connection with the community through a range of initiatives and programs. While we haven’t always paused to highlight them, a lot has been happening as we continue to learn, grow, and respond to community needs.

From organization-wide efforts to dynamic, student-led projects, our work is driven by creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to meaningful change across math, STEM, and financial literacy. We also offer free math games and learning tools on our website for anyone curious to explore.

Current programs / initiatives

Discover STEM Together

Discover STEM Together (DST) is a community-based STEM initiative co-led by Houston’s Young Monarchs. DST brings youth, families, and partners together through hands-on activities and STEM exposure, building confidence, curiosity, and connection.

Familias y Finanzas

Familias y Finanzas is a bilingual, family-centered financial literacy program that supports parents, caregivers, and youth together. Through community-based sessions, families build financial confidence and shared language to make informed decisions across generations.

Inventing Units

Inventing Units is a hands-on math workshop that builds conceptual understanding through exploration and real-world problem solving, strengthening foundational math skills.

Community Math Activities

Events featuring fun activities for students (and parents too!) to discover how they can learn mathematical concepts through exploring everyday ideas and communicating about them together with their peers.

Math Game Creation

YDM has invented math games to use with our students, and our youth web developer has created web-based versions you can play.

Empowering Equation

The Empowering Equation is a youth-focused program that connects math skills to real-world applications, leadership development, and workforce pathways; supporting students as they build confidence and envision future opportunities.

Roll into Calculus

This workshop guides high school or early college students to discover several core concepts central to physics and calculus through guided small-group collaboration.

Debunking Math Education Myths

Workshops for ages 13 and up, for youth and parents to examine "math education myths"--widely held but false beliefs about math as a subject, how it's learned, and who it's for.

Previous offerings

1-1 Virtual Tutoring

Founded in 2021, You Discover Math began with free or donation-based virtual 1-1 tutoring. While no longer offered as an ongoing program, it remains the foundation of our work. Limited tutoring may be available by referral.

Community Building with Competition Math Students

Series of competition math lessons that lasts at least 24 weeks and help boost students' scores, and engagement with math as a whole.
