PRIVACY POLICY

You Discover Math respects the privacy of every client and every volunteer.  This policy explains how our website collects information from visitors, and how we use that information.

We only collect personal information when essential and relevant.  Our goal is to use personal information only for the reasons you share it with us.  We keep all clients’ and volunteers’ personal information confidential.  We do not sell or disclose anyone's personal information for any commercial purposes.  We have certain third-party IT service accounts which are essential for the hosting and functioning of our website.  We use appropriate security measures and privacy protocols where it is essential for these third parties to handle personal information.

We hope you decide to become a client or a volunteer with You Discover Math.  In that case, we will make a  terms of service agreement, which includes privacy policies for our ongoing activities together (described separately from this website privacy policy).  The scope of this policy is limited to privacy topics for our website.

We value honesty and transparency as well as simplicity.  So we wrote this document using plain & simple English, leaving out some of the techno-details.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at info@youdiscovermath.org or at the physical address listed at the end of this document.

By choosing to visit youdiscovermath.org, you agree to this Privacy Policy.

What data we collect, and how we use it

Our website does not use any tracking devices, advertisement targeting techniques, or other stuff that you probably wouldn't consider relevant or necessary.  Our policy is to collect only the data we need to support math learners.

The data we collect from our website falls into 3 categories:

  • Client information
  • Volunteer information
  • Device technical information

Client information

If you submit our web form to request tutoring or other information from us, you will provide some of your personal information to us, including:

  • name and preferred contact info;
  • your city and state (to determine your time zone, and to reference any public policies for math education & volunteer organizations that might be applicable in your location);
  • whether you’re a math student, a parent/guardian of a student, a school counselor, etc.;
  • any personal details you may want to include in your description of the math learning situation you'd like our help with.

We use this information to start understanding how we can best respond to support you.

After you submit our webform, our team will get in touch with you to learn more about your math learning situation, so that we can set up a tutoring plan that’s catered to your unique needs.  Your personal information is always kept confidential.  Further details are described in our Terms of Service document.

Volunteer information

If you submit our web form to express interest in volunteering with us, you will provide some of your personal information to us, including:

  • your name and preferred contact info;
  • your parent’s or guardian’s name & contact info if you are under 18 years of age;
  • any personal details you may want to include in your description of why & how you’re interested in helping You Discover Math.

We use this information to determine which member(s) of our team will contact you to arrange a get-to-know-you session.

Every volunteer at You Discover Math is required to provide some additional information to the background check service provider we work with, as one of several safeguards we use out of care for all our clients & volunteers.  This information is collected separately from our website, and the process is described in our Volunteer Agreement.

Device technical information

As with most websites, certain technical information is retrieved from your device when you visit our site.  For example, our website automatically detects your operating system and screen size to have our website fit nicely to your device. We also collect information on which of our web pages are most commonly visited, the duration of visits, and the approximate location of visitors based on IP addresses. All of this data is used to monitor website performance and to determine how users interact with our website to help inform our design decisions.

COPPA

The United States Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) requires organizations to obtain verifiable parent or guardian consent in order to collect or use the personal information of individuals under the age of 13.  We do not knowingly collect personal information from individuals under 13 years of age without parent or guardian consent.  Our website is designed to inform any visitor under age 13 that they should ask a parent or guardian to contact us on their behalf.

If we learn we have collected or received personal information about an individual under 13 years of age without verification of parent or guardian consent, we will delete that information. If you have a reason to believe we might have inadvertently received personal information about an individual under 13 years of age, please contact us at info@youdiscovermath.org.

Service Providers

We hire certain third-party information technology (IT) companies (“Service Providers”) to host our website and for other essential functions.  Each of these Service Providers is obligated NOT to use or disclose anyone’s personal information for any purpose other than maintaining the functionality of our website and related systems.

Reclaim Hosting

  • Our internet domain, youdiscovermath.org, along with our website & the applications used to build it, are all hosted on Reclaim Hosting’s servers.
  • Reclaim Hosting provides institutions and educators with an easy way to offer their students domains and web hosting that they own and control.  We chose Reclaim Hosting because of their education-focused mission, their reputation for quality & customer service, and the fact that they share our values about inclusivity for everyone.
  • Reclaim Hosting’s privacy policy is available here.

SquareUp

  • We have an account with SquareUp that allows us to receive donations from supporters, to sell You Discover Math merchandise, and to receive payments from any clients who choose to pay-it-forward with a monetary contribution for our tutoring.
  • If you click on a link from our website to make a donation or payment to us, your transaction will be processed with SquareUp’s small business online checkout systems.
  • SquareUp’s privacy policy is available here.

External websites

Sometimes we put links from our website to external websites, when relevant to our mission.  You Discover Math is not responsible for the privacy practices of websites operated by other parties.  When you leave You Discover Math’s site, you should refer to other websites’ privacy policies to understand how they handle your information.

Safeguarding Personal Information

You Discover Math recognizes the importance of protecting the information we collect from our website visitors.  We use this information for internal purposes only.  This information is never sold or disclosed to third parties for any commercial purpose.  To ensure the information is only used appropriately, we use a combination of digital systems and managerial safeguards.

  • We only retain data collected from our website when relevant to supporting math learners.  Data that does not need to be stored gets deleted immediately after use.
  • When necessary to store personal information about our clients or volunteers, we store this data securely & confidentially, limiting access to only essential teammates.
  • If we have more requests for tutoring than we have tutor capacity on our current team, we promptly respond to each inquiry, we provide honest information about our capacity to support additional clients, we provide referrals to alternative resources, and we add prospective new clients to our waitlist.
  • We review our waitlist in “aggregate form” (for example, how many students are waiting for support with calculus and how many are waiting for support with statistics) to guide our volunteer recruitment & development strategies.  We never disclose any client-identifying personal information when recruiting prospective volunteers.

If at any point you wish to have your personal information removed from our records, you may contact us at info@youdiscovermath.org and request us to do so.

Changes to our privacy policy

Our Privacy Policy originates from the principle of care for people.  That won’t ever change.

Sometimes we might need to update our privacy policy with new details—for example, if we hire another IT service provider, we will be transparent by stating this and adding the relevant information from their privacy policy to our own.  If we update our privacy policy, we will post those changes on our website to keep you aware of what information we collect and how we use it.  Changes to our Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on our website.
