Tutoring Questions & Answers

Why did you create YDM?

The YDM Team finds that helping people learn math adds a sense of fulfillment and happiness to our lives. We believe every student should feel encouraged & supported along their math learning journeys. We believe every student – including you— deserves a great opportunity to learn & discover math with the support of people who are enthusiastic, dedicated, approachable, and kind.

In summary, we’re doing this because we want to help YOU discover math!

How much does tutoring cost?

YDM offers free or donation-based tutoring. If you understand the spirit behind phrases like "pay it forward" and "do good, pass it on" then you already get the idea of how this works.

Are your tutors qualified?

Yes! Our tutor team is built from highly experienced math educators & technical professionals.

Meet our Tutor Team & see their experience.

We pride ourselves on being great at helping people learn math. We are teachers, engineers, scientists, and students from all kinds of backgrounds. Our interview process makes sure every new YDM tutor shares our values & beliefs. We all have big hearts for community service, and we all care deeply about all students having quality math learning opportunities. Each new tutor is well-qualified and onboarded by an experienced YDM tutor. We are highly aware of our tutors’ experience helping learners at various levels of math. We ensure every new tutor is competent and confident before they start working with students. All of our tutors give and receive peer feedback, help each other improve, and learn from each other’s strengths. Everyone at You Discover Math continuously develops themselves and each other to become even more effective community servants.

I am a high-schooler, can I volunteer?

Absolutely! High school students are more than welcome to volunteer with You Discover Math. We value the fresh perspective, energy, and enthusiasm that young individuals bring to our team. There are various roles and opportunities available that you can contribute to, whether it’s helping with outreach, serving on our leadership team, or tutoring a student.

Engaging with YDM is not only a chance to give back to the community but also a great opportunity to develop skills, gain experience in a non-profit setting, and connect with like-minded peers and professionals in the field. We often write glowing letters of recommendation for our volunteers, which can be a valuable addition to your college applications or resume.

For specific volunteer opportunities and to find a role that best fits your interests and schedule, please check our current listings on the volunteer page.

Is it secret? Is it safe?

Yes, to both questions! Also, great Lord of the Rings reference you did there!

All our tutors are background-checked. Through our code of conduct, we hold ourselves to the highest ethics & privacy standards. We record every tutoring session. This gives everyone peace of mind that each session is conducted professionally. The video files are stored securely. Only the Client and authorized YDM tutors can access tutoring session recordings. This also allows the Student to rewind & pause & replay their sessions, to assist in completing practice problems during their individual study!
Every client’s personal information is kept strictly confidential. Your information is never sold or given away to marketing companies. We don't like spammers and scammers either!

For full details see the YDM Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
