OUR PURPOSE / WHAT WE DO
WHY DID WE FORM YOU DISCOVER MATH?
- Too few math learners test at grade level.
- Too many math learners lack math role models they can relate to.
- Too many parents & guardians of math learners feel confused how to help their child.
- Too many math teachers feel unsupported and stuck in systems that are counterproductive to students’ learning needs.
- Too many math learners get the wrong impression of math as a subject, and the wrong impression of their own math ability.
OUR GOALS
- Build diverse teams who are passionate about making high-quality math learning opportunities accessible to ALL students.
- Support each other and the communities where we operate, to make lasting positive change.
OUTREACH
- We do purposeful outreach with communities where our help is most needed.
- Our goal is to recruit & empower young people to become Math Student Leaders on our team, and role models & influencers in their communities.
- Our goal is to support our Math Student Leaders and other local experts, with resources & coaching from our network of experienced math educators and technical professionals.
- We seek to grow a diverse nationwide network of young and enthusiastic Math Student Leaders, to sustain YDM with talent into the future.
MATH LEARNER SUPPORT
- We offer free or donation-based math tutoring & academic coaching relationships via videoconference.
- We engage every specific client, learn what interests them, and learn how they like to learn. We identify where each student needs the most support.
- We meet each student “where they are” and cater the tutoring plan to their unique situation.
- We pair each student or small group with a tutor/coach/mentor, who works consistently with the student in an ongoing relationship.
- With this support, our students grow their confidence, become more independent with time, and engage more proactively in their own math learning journeys.
- One way we will measure our success is by the number of our students who decide later in their academic careers to join YDM's team as a tutor/mentor or as a Math Student Leader.
COMMUNITY GROWTH
- We build supportive learning relationships based on care.
- We understand learning happens in a community. Students, parents, tutors, teachers, administrators all have roles to play in developing a supportive learning community.
- As volunteers, we work together with all community members who share our commitment to quality math learning opportunities for everyone.
- We partner with other organizations who share our values & goals, to create win/win/win scenarios for our communities & organizations & volunteers.
